Making Meaning of your Career for the New Year

Over the holidays I read “Man’s Search for Meaning” by Viktor Frankl, who was a concentration camp survivor in Germany in WWII, a doctor and a psychotherapist. His incredible book describes the universal search to make meaning of our life experiences, even in the face of extreme suffering. I read this book through the lens of a career counsellor, knowing how many of my clients come to me when they feel they can no longer make meaning of the unhappiness they encounter in their jobs everyday.

.

It takes courage to acknowledge when we need to find new meaning in our lives, and new motivations to keep going.  I consider helping people to discover or recover meaning in their working lives a sacred privilege. Each person that comes to me for career counselling is attempting to answer the question that Frankl says in his book is the one we must always answer: what is life asking of me now

.

The following are a few things that have been illuminated for me through this book:

.

1. Meaning and motivation are completely unique to each person. Your set of circumstances, the people in your life, your skills, interests, and opportunities are completely unique to you.

.

2.  We are more than the sum of all of these parts: deep within all of us is a hidden potential that life is constantly giving us opportunities to understand and    explore.

.

3. The things that help us make meaning of our circumstances can change. Relationships change. We learn new things. We start new projects. The job we used to love isn’t what it used to be. We are always discovering and recovering what is meaningful to us.

.

4. Hope for the uncertain future takes an enormous amount of courage. It takes courage to hope for something different than what we are experiencing. It takes courage to ask hard questions and attempt to answer them, and then to ask them all over again.

.

What is life asking of you now and for 2019? If you need to find new meaning in your work and career, send me a line! It would be an honour to meet you.
